The Nelson Mandela African Institute Science and Technology (NM AIST-Arusha) has been established under the Tanzania’s Universities Act No. 7 of 2005, and as part of a network of African Institutes of Science and Technology (AISTs) in Sub-Saharan Africa. The NM AIST-Arusha envisions becoming a World-Class Institution of Higher Learning dedicated to the pursuit and promotion of excellence in science and engineering, and their applications for economic growth and sustainable development in Africa. The NM AIST-Arusha will deliver and promote high quality and internationally competitive teaching and learning, research and innovation, and public service in science, engineering and technology for enhanced value addition to people and natural resources, and entrepreneurship to stimulate and catalyze economic growth and sustainable development in Africa.
The NM AIST-Arusha is now in the process of recruiting academic, administrative and technical staff in order to start delivering postgraduate studies in various fields of science and engineering, within 2010. NM AIST-Arusha will start with two main programmes, namely; (i) Life Sciences and Bio-Engineering, and (ii) Mathematics, Computational and Communication Science and Engineering (including a heavy dose of ICT). The two programmes will also incorporate related modules of Materials Science and Engineering, Water Resources and Environmental Science and Engineering, and Sustainable Energy Science and Engineering. All students studying at NM AIST-Arusha will be required to take selected modules of Humanities and Business Studies to develop attributes that will enable them become effective and efficient technology leaders and industry captains.
